A Champion's Legacy

Dirk Nowitzki's name is synonymous with greatness in the world of basketball. The Dallas Mavericks' legend left a mark on the game and the city of Dallas, embracing the power forward position and inspiring a generation of players.

The 2011 Championship Run

Nowitzki's biggest achievement came in 2011 when he led the Mavericks to their first NBA championship, defeating the Miami Heat in the NBA Finals.

Dirk Nowitzki has the hardest championship runs in NBA history. Despite carrying a 101°F fever in Game 4, Nowitzki hit the winning basket, tying the series at 2-2, and cementing his status as a clutch performer.

Looking at some of the teams they had to face during that playoff run, Portland Trailblazers, Los Angeles Lakers coming off a championship in 2010, the Oklahoma City Thunder and the Miami Heat with LeBron, Wade and Bosh.

The Unstoppable Shot

Nowitzki's signature one legged fadeaway shot is widely regarded as one of the most unguardable moves in basketball history.

LeBron James called it the second most unguardable move ever, behind Kareem Abdul-Jabbar's famous skyhook. This shot allowed Nowitzki to score from anywhere on the court, making him a menace to defend.

Career Highlights

14 time NBA All-Star — Nowitzki's excellence earned him a number of All-Star selections.

12 time All-NBA Team selection — He was a dominant force in the league, recognized for his impressive on the court skills.

NBA MVP — Nowitzki won the MVP award in 2007, becoming the first European player to receive the award.

NBA Finals MVP — He was named Finals MVP in 2011, after leading the Mavericks to their first championship win.

Nowitzki's influence on the game extends beyond his individual accomplishments. He opened the doors for European players in the NBA and helped usher in the era of "stretch fours" which means power forwards who can space the floor with their shooting abilities. His success inspired a generation of tall, skilled players who modeled their games after his unique style.
